Sanding and Surfaces PDF Print E-mail

Preparation of surfaces is most important for a fine finished job.  When sanding rough walls and ceilings, proper care must be taken to cover areas with clean drop sheets which are shaken out when painting is completed.  Baseboards are dusted prior to applying a finishing coat.  Otherwise, the dust particles will create an uneven and unsightly appearance.  Every professional painter knows this.  It's the small details which are telling and can make all the difference in the satisfaction you have in the final job.

Many of us with older homes or unfinished basements still need to maintain a clean and practical flooring finish. Keeping the dust down from an unfinished floor can cause needless effort. The best solution, would be to cover the floor with an epoxy finish. Prepare the surface by filling all the cracks and ensuring the area is as level as possible by using self-leveling floor compound. Make sure the floor is good and dry before application of a two part epoxy paint which can be rolled on. Plan to do this at a time in the year when good ventilation will help dry the paint. If this is too job for the home owner, then give a contractor a call.

Mold

As everyone knows, your home is your largest investment and sustains equity of properly maintained.  There is no other better way to conserve your property than to rely on professional and knowledgeable trades to make timely repairs to avoid costly long term problems.  The most common and unsightly kind of repair involves mold caused by damp.  Don't make the mistake of doing a cosmetic patch job with plaster and coats of paint, only to discover that you'll have to repeat the same job over and over again.  First of all, discover the source of the water damage, whether it is a leaky roof, improperly installed and serviced gutters, or a burst pipe.  Call in the repair people to assess the damage.  We have several trades to recommend.  Secondly, if this is a basement problem, there might be inadequate ventilation and during rainy, muggy summers, a dehumidifier is a must.  Lastly, call in a contractor who will thoroughly remove all rotted wood, soft plaster and drywall, replace with clean new materials and seal the area with the appropriate paint materials.

All About Decks PDF Print E-mail

The Toronto Home show had inspiring ideas about outdoor living and you're now ready to make the most of your outdoor space.  What to do about the deck?  Leaving it natural and weathered may not suit your  upscale investment in patio furniture.  Want a more finished look to your entertainment area?  Well, staining  the deck will not only prolong the life of the decking by shutting out moisture, but it will also bring out the rich patina of the wood. Penetrating, non-film building oil-based satins or clear finishes are recommended on exterior wood decks. Semi-transparent or pigmented deck stains will last longer than clear wood finishes because the pigment provides an extra measure of protection. Deck boards should be thoroughly dry before staining and stained on all sides and end sealed after cutting to length in order to stabilize the moisture content and exclude moisture absorption from the underside.
